50th American Music Awards Recap

The 50th American Music Awards took place on Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The show, produced by dick Clark productions and ABC, was hosted by Wayne Brady. The star-studded event celebrated the year’s best music and performances, as voted on by fans. Puerto Rican performer Bad Bunny topped the list of nominees this year with the most nods, earning eight, including his first-ever for artist of the year. She now has the most wins of any female artist, surpassing Whitney Houston’s record of 39.

Accepting the award for artist of the year, Swift vowed to “do everything in my power to help restore faith in this time when we so desperately need it.” “This has been a really hard year for a lot of us,” she said. “There has been so much loss, so much sadness, so much grief. We’ve seen a lot of people leave us this year, and seen a lot of friends and family members and loved ones struggle. I’ve seen a lot of you struggle, and I’ve seen a lot of you put up a really brave face.”

The top award of the night, artist of the year, went to Taylor Swift, who is no stranger to the AMAs. This is her third time winning the coveted prize. She also took home the awards for favorite album – pop/rock for “Lover” and favorite female artist – pop/rock. Swift wasn’t the only three-time winner of the night. Billie Eilish, who is up for eight Grammy Awards next month, including album of the year and record of the year, also won three AMAs. She took home the awards for favorite artist – alternative rock, favorite female artist – alternative rock, and favorite song – soul/R&B for “Bad Guy.”

Other winners included Lizzo, who won favorite female artist – soul/R&B and favorite song – soul/R&B for “Truth Hurts,” Khalid, who won favorite male artist – soul/R&B and favorite album – soul/R&B for “Free Spirit,” Halsey, who won favorite female artist – pop/rock, and the Jonas Brothers, who won favorite duo or group – pop/rock.

The night also featured some amazing performances. Lizzo opened the show with a medley of her hits “Cuz I Love You” and “Truth Hurts.” She was joined on stage by a bevy of plus-size dancers, all wearing sequined bodysuits and holding giant mirrors. The performance was a powerful statement about self-love and acceptance.

Other performers included Lil Nas X, who sang his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus; Halsey, who sang her new single “Graveyard”; the Jonas Brothers, who performed their comeback single “Sucker”; Camila Cabello, who sang her hit “Havana” with Ozuna; and Taylor Swift, who performed her new single “Lover.”

The 50th American Music Awards also recognized the late Whitney Houston with a special award, the AMAs Icon Award. The award was presented to Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, by her aunt, Pat Houston.

“My mother was always proud of her accomplishments, but she would say that her greatest achievement was me,” Bobbi Kristina said in accepting the award. “I’m just thankful that I had the chance to grow up with such an incredible role model who taught me how to be a woman.”

The 50th American Music Awards was a night to remember, celebrating the best in music and the amazing talent of today’s artists.
