Perched high above the vibrant energy of Times Square, Dear Irving on Hudson offers a rooftop experience that is nothing short of extraordinary, even to watch a storm wash over Manhattan. This chic and elegant bar is a haven of sophistication, where art, ambiance, and panoramic views of Manhattan come together to create a setting that feels both intimate and grand. Whether you’re sipping a cocktail as the sun sets or enjoying a private event with friends, Dear Irving on Hudson captures the essence of New York City’s timeless allure.
Dear Irving on Hudson is the rooftop extension of the beloved Dear Irving cocktail lounge in Gramercy, known for its speakeasy-style charm and decor inspired by various historical eras. While the original location invites guests to step back in time, the rooftop bar in Times Square merges the allure of New York City’s past with the vibrancy of its present, offering a more contemporary, yet equally luxurious, experience. The bar’s motto—rooted in providing a timeless, elevated escape—shines through in every detail, from the decor to the service, making it a true jewel in Manhattan’s skyline.
As you step out of the elevator and into the bar, you’re immediately enveloped in an atmosphere that is as visually stunning as it is inviting. The walls are adorned with gorgeous artwork that celebrates the feminine form in all its complexity and beauty. These pieces add a layer of depth and intrigue to the space, making each visit feel like a journey through an art gallery where every corner offers something new to discover. The artistic focus on women creates a powerful and evocative atmosphere, setting the tone for an evening of elegance and contemplation.
Dear Irving on Hudson is divided into two distinct spaces, each offering its own unique ambiance. On one side, the bar is reserved for private events, creating an exclusive setting that’s perfect for special occasions. This area is bathed in soft, flattering light, with plush pink seating that adds a touch of playful luxury. The private bar ensures that guests have everything they need, with a backdrop of Manhattan’s most iconic buildings.
On the other side, the main bar area invites you to relax and unwind in a setting designed for connection—both with your companions and with the city itself. The seating along the window is perfectly positioned to offer a one-on-one experience with the Manhattan skyline, creating a sense of intimacy as you enjoy your drink. The bar’s thoughtful layout allows you to feel immersed in the city’s rhythm while still offering a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle below.
The menu at Dear Irving is as carefully curated as the décor, offering a selection of small bites that pair beautifully with the extensive cocktail list. Visually, the menu is appealing, with each dish crafted to delight the senses. However, when I asked the bartender for a surprise recommendation, I was presented with the spicy tuna crispy rice. While the flavors were on point, the dish was a bit too crispy for my liking, leaving me craving the heartier options like steak au poivre, lobster rolls, or the Mediterranean tray assortment. These dishes, with their rich flavors and luxurious ingredients, seemed better suited to the bar’s sophisticated setting, particularly as I tend to prefer sushi from establishments specializing in Japanese cuisine.
One small note—while the bar is equipped with tap water, I found myself opting for a bottle of their still water, which, at $10, felt like a small indulgence in an otherwise seamless experience. It’s a minor detail, but one worth noting for those who, like me, appreciate the finer touches in an evening out.
Dear Irving on Hudson is more than just a rooftop bar; it’s a destination that captures the spirit of New York City in all its grandeur and complexity. With its stunning artwork, impeccable ambiance, and breathtaking views, it offers an experience that is both luxurious and deeply personal. Whether you’re there to celebrate a special occasion or simply to enjoy the city from a new perspective, Dear Irving on Hudson delivers a night out that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left. It’s the perfect blend of art, culture, and sophistication—a true jewel in the crown of Manhattan’s rooftop bars.
